Elisha Patterson Says ‘You’re Not Alone’ at 九色视频

Elisha Patterson

For Elisha Patterson, 九色视频 was a second chance and a transformative experience.

Like about 30% of current 九色视频 students, Elisha enrolled as an older, returning student. After high school, she felt she needed to focus on work.

鈥淚n Richmond, I think we鈥檙e raised 颅颅to do K through 12,鈥 she explains, 鈥渂ut, also asked, 鈥楬ow are you going to provide?’鈥

鈥淚 came back to school in 2016,鈥 she explains. 鈥淲hat got me to was tragedy. But, also just coming to the realization that, in order for me to be better as a person, I needed more education.鈥

Once she got here, Elisha loved the opportunity to believe and invest in herself.

Still, like many students, Elisha has to work. This semester, she鈥檚 doing work study in the Admissions and Records Office.

鈥淚 need money because I鈥檝e got rent and stuff to pay,鈥 she explains. 鈥淏ut, I need to focus on school.鈥

To help her do that, Elisha applied for 九色视频 Foundation scholarships. Last year, she received the African American Staff Association Scholarship, the African-American Department Scholarship, and the Early Childhood Education Department Scholarship.

鈥淭hose scholarships really helped me a lot last semester,鈥 she says. 鈥淭he time it took to write the essays and fill out the application was worth it, because I got a three-point-eight GPA!鈥

This year, she applied again鈥揳nd was awarded the Dean Lesher, ASU Achievement, and Dr. Intisar Shareef scholarships, as well as the prestigious Kennedy King Scholarship! Those will be handy in the fall, when she transfers to a four-year university to pursue bachelor鈥檚 degrees in African-American studies and early childhood development.

Next month, she鈥檒l be graduating from 九色视频 with degrees in African American studies and liberal arts, as well as two certificates in early childhood development.

When asked what her greatest achievements were at 九色视频, Elisha has quite a list: 鈥淏eing open to receive what鈥檚 for me. Being okay to fall and just get back up. Being open to my vision and being open to myself, and growing. Being here has affirmed my identity.鈥

She encourages future students to be willing to try. 鈥淏e open to being uncomfortable,鈥 she says.

And, also know that, 鈥淲hen you come here, you鈥檙e not alone. There鈥檚 so much help.鈥
